Tumbleweed's Retro-FAQs Shack

Welcome to Retro-FAQs.

FAQS, FAQs, FAQs! So what's the big deal?

As part of the retro-computing movement, it's important to collect and preserve the information relating to old computers. Here are a few of the FAQs that have made a difference and have helped folks re-learn (or learn for the first time) all about their old computer systems.

First is theAtari 8-bit FAQ for all those out there with these classic little machines. The Retro-Computing Society has a couple (with loads of software) along with a few peripherals. This is a very detailed FAQ, everything for everyone.

Next up is The CoCo FAQ. For those unfamiliar with the nomenclature, CoCo is short for Color Computer, as in Tandy's line of computers from 1980 to 1990. For more information, visit TRS-80 Color Computer Homepage.

Admittedly I don't know much about the PDP (Programmed Data Processor) line, but the PDP-8 FAQ succeeds in shedding a bit of light. Another very complete FAQ, this is a great place to look for not simply info on the PDP-8, but the PDP line by Digital in general.

At some point in time, I'm hoping to set up a BBS system on either my PC RT or some other similar system. For that purpose, I nabbed a copy of the UNIX BBS FAQ. A good collection of resources for UNIX users. Probably not the end-all for this topic, but certainly a good start.

Finally, and most importantly, The Jargon File (aka, the Hacker's Dictionary). I've taken a 1990 edition and created an TOC index for easy look-up. Warning: this is a big file, text only.
I've found a newer html version that's very complete, but it's also very large and designed for Mac users. Give me some time and I'll make a downloadable version for other platforms.

And before I forget, for links to other FAQs and retro-computing sites, go to my complete Links Page.
